The Recipient of the ICO Bietti Medal is Prof. Robert N. Weinreb.
The Bietti Medal is awarded every four years to a distinguished ophthalmologist in recognition of scientific and educational contribution in ophthalmology and for facilitating international communications in the ophthalmic community.
Professor Weinreb is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard Medical School. He is Distinguished Professor and Chair of Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology, Director of Shiley Eye Institute, Distinguished Professor in Bioengineering, Holder of the Morris Gleich MD Chair of Glaucoma, and Director of Hamilton Glaucoma Center, University of California San Diego, United States.
He is former President of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), American Glaucoma Society (AGS), World Glaucoma Association (WGA), Foundation of the American Glaucoma Society, and the Latin American Glaucoma Society. He is a co-Founder of the World Glaucoma Association and serves as Chief Editor of the International Glaucoma Review. Professor Weinreb’s research interests are diverse and range from the front to the back of the eye with more than 91,000 citations. Dr. Weinreb has been ranked for several consecutive years by Expertscape as the global leader in glaucoma scholarship. In 2023, he was the recipient of the prestigious Laureate Award of the World Glaucoma Association, and he also was ranked #2 on the Powerlist of the world’s most influential ophthalmologists (The Ophthalmologist). In 2024, he was the Honoree of the American Glaucoma Society. He has trained and mentored numerous department chairs in the United States and around the world; many others are professors or have excelled as leaders in practice in their communities or industry.
