2026 ICO Gonin Medal
The Recipient of the ICO Gonin Medal is Prof. Fernando Arevalo.
The ICO Gonin Medal is awarded every four years and recognizes outstanding work and research in the field of ophthalmology.
Professor Arevalo is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Retina Division at Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Among many outstanding accomplishments, Professor Arevalo is a former President of the Pan-American Retina and Vitreous Society, Past-President of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, immediate Past-chairman of the Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation and the current chairman of the International Uveitis Study Group Foundation. Professor. Arevalo has been a leader and a founder of the Pan American Collaborative Retina Study, founded The King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) Uveitis Survey Study Group, and Collaborative Retina Study Group in the Middle East.
During his career he worked in Venezuela, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, among others, having more than 900 scientific publications, 18 books, and delivered more than 1500 invited lecture presentations that have led to many international recognition and awards.
