2026 ICO International Duke Elder Medal
The Recipient of the ICO International Duke Elder Medal is Professor Namrata Sharma.
The International Duke Elder Medal is awarded every four years to an ophthalmologist recognized for outstanding global leadership who, by his or her distinction, leadership and teaching, has contributed most to the development of international relations and friendship between ophthalmologists, and who has advanced the field by his or her contributions in writing and organization in ophthalmology.
Professor Namrata Sharma oversees Cataract, Cornea & Refractive Surgery Services at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. She holds many distinguished positions: Chairperson of the All-India Ophthalmological Society Scientific Committee and Indian Society of Cornea and Keratorefractive Surgeons, Treasurer of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), President of Eye Bank Association of India, past President of Cornea Society of India, past APAO Regional Secretary, Webinar Convenor of APAO Congress Standing Committee, Council Member of the Asia Cornea Society, Eye Bank Association of America and Global Alliance of Eye Bank Association Advisory Board Member and “Director at large” international member of Cornea Society.
Professor Sharma holds many awards: First Dr. Paul Dubord Award for International Eye Banking, APAO Distinguished Service Award and Senior Achievement Award, and AAO Senior Achievement Award, International Ophthalmologist Education Award, and Best of the Show Awards. She was honoured among top 100 most influential female figures in Ophthalmology (Power List 2021). She published 700 publications in international peer reviewed journals, authored 19 books and 120 book chapters.
