2026 ICO Ophthalmic Pathology Award
The Recipient of the 2026 ICO Ophthalmic Pathology Award is Professor Hans E. Grossniklaus.
The ICO Ophthalmic Pathology Award is awarded every four years to an ophthalmologist recognized for outstanding work and achievements in ophthalmic pathology.
Professor Hans E. Grossniklaus is professor emeritus of ophthalmology and pathology, Emory University School of Medicine. He has been on the faculty at Emory University and served as director of the L.F. Montgomery Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory from 1989-2025 and is founding director of the Ocular Oncology Service.
He is a member of numerous national and international organizations, including Board of Directors of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Past-President and Past-Executive Vice President of the American Ophthalmological Society, Past-President of ARVO, and Past-President of the American Association of Ocular Oncologists and Pathologists. He is founding Co-Editor in Chief of the journal Ocular Oncology and Pathology.
He has received numerous awards, including the AAO Senior Achievement Award, the outstanding former Heed Fellow Award, Richard Green Lecture Award and the Jackson Lecture at the AAO.
He has published over 600 manuscripts, 25 chapters and edited 10 books, contributed to the WHO Blue Book of ophthalmic tumors and continues his research on the pathobiology of retinoblastoma and uveal melanoma.
