We are pleased to spotlight three more of our 2021 ICO Fellows in this issue: Dr. Evelyn Tai Li Min, Dr. Aslan Aykut, and Dr. Vera Mawusime Beyuo. These promising young ophthalmologists join the more than 1,250 ICO Fellows from 84 countries around the world who have been awarded a prestigious ICO Fellowship to date.

The ICO Fellowships Program provides ophthalmologists, mainly from settings with limited resources, with the opportunity to enhance their subspecialty knowledge and practical skills through a placement with a top host organization. Following completion of this highly rigorous program, ICO Fellows return to their home countries ready to improve eye care by contributing to vital programs aimed at preserving vision and preventing blindness.

More ICO Fellows will be introduced in the coming weeks.

Evelyn Tai Li Min, MD

Congratulations to Dr. Evelyn Tai Li Min from Malaysia. Interested in gaining specialised knowledge on oculoplastic and orbital surgery, she will train under the supervision of Prof. Harsha S. Reddy at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai Hospital in the USA.

“I hope to expand my perspective of the scope of this field and better understand how oculoplastics meet patients’ needs. I would also like to assist in the management of common oculoplastic problems because I believe that experiential learning cements the building blocks of evidence-based medicine. After I return to my institution, I hope to continue developing my skills so I can serve where the need is greatest and share my experience gained via this fellowship with my undergraduate and postgraduate students.”

The ICO would like to thank Santen for their generous support of this ICO Fellowship.

Aslan Aykut, MD FEBOpht, FICO

Congratulations to Dr. Aslan Aykut from Turkey. Looking to learn more about intraocular tumors in both adult and pediatric patients, he will train at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Centre in the USA under the supervision of Prof. Hakan Demirci.

“I want to increase my knowledge and skills, especially in pediatric and adult intraocular tumors. I hope to learn current methods in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of these tumors, and gain specific experience required for tumor surgery. The training I receive through this fellowship will help me better serve patients in this area carefully and safely, and allow me to reach a level that will contribute to studies in this field.”

The ICO would like to thank Santen for their generous support of this ICO Fellowship.

Vera Mawusime Beyuo, MD

Congratulations to Dr. Vera Mawusime Beyuo from Ghana. Under the supervision of Prof. Monte Anthony Del Monte at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Centre in the USA, she hopes to gain specialised knowledge in pediatric ophthalmology and international best practices for managing different types of strabismus.

“The knowledge gained from this fellowship will help prepare me for a successful career path as a pediatric ophthalmologist who can adapt international best practices in a low-resource setting. The exposure and knowledge acquired will enable me to provide high-quality eye-care services to children in Ghana and the sub region, and help me train young residents, medical officers, and other eye-care professionals who render services to children. This will enrich our practice in Ghana and possibly expand the range of services we currently provide.”
