Professor Stanley Chang Receives the 2022 ICO Gonin Medal

Professor Stanley Chang, a renowned specialist in vitreoretinal disorders and surgery, is the 2022 recipient of the prestigious ICO Gonin Medal. This honour is awarded every four years to an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of retina.

Prof. Chang is the K.K. Tse and Ku Teh Ying Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City and the former Edward S. Harkness Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center. He has pioneered many of the surgical techniques currently used, including revolutionary approaches for complicated retinal detachments that have improved outcomes for patients worldwide.

On March 24th, 2022, at a Gonin Medal Ceremony held at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, the diploma of the Gonin Medal was presented to Prof. Chang. Addresses were delivered by Prof. Neeru Gupta, ICO President; Prof. Frédéric Herman, Rector of the University of Lausanne; and Prof. Thomas J. Wolfensberger, Medical Director and Chief of Vitreoretinal Surgery, Hôpital Ophtalmique Jules-Gonin, University of Lausanne, and organizer of the meeting. Prof. Chang delivered a lecture entitled “The Evolution of Retinal Detachment Surgery after Jules Gonin”.

As the ICO Gonin Medal recipient, Prof. Chang will be officially recognized by the ICO for outstanding contributions to ophthalmology at the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 World Ophthalmology Congress on September 9th, 2022.
