It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of our dear friend, esteemed colleague, and past ICO Board Member, Professor Emilio Campos on September 18, 2021. His death is a tremendous loss to his family and to the international ophthalmology community.
A renowned expert in strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology, Professor Campos was Professor and Chief of Ophthalmology at the University of Bologna. He was an influential figure in ophthalmology and served as President of the Italian Ophthalmological Society and President of the International Strabismology Association. He also co-authored the definitive textbook on strabismus, “Binocular Vision and Ocular Motility: Theory and Management of Strabismus”.
Professor Campos served on the Board of the International Council of Ophthalmology from 2010 to 2016, championing the role of ophthalmologists in preserving vision around the world and helping to advance the practice of ophthalmology through his ground-breaking research on strabismus.
All of us who had the privilege to know and work alongside Professor Campos will continue to remember him fondly as a warm and caring person. He will be greatly missed and we send our sincerest condolences to his family at this very difficult time.
